These days there are technological innovations making hair restoration both easier and more natural looking than ever before. Gone are the unsightly hair plus of prior decades, replaced by computer aided transplant tools and advanced methodologies.
At the top of the list are the two most advanced techniques: FUE and FUT.
What Are FUT and FUE Hair Restoration?
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) involves the removal of a tiny strip of skin, allowing the extraction of transplant-ready hair follicles. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a related method where individual hair follicles are collected in small groups rather than taking entire strips of the epidermis, 1-4 at a time. This finer level of detail allows more organic looking transplant patterns and a more natural end result.
Is FUE as Effective as FUT?
These are the two most effective methods currently approved, but which gives better results? Despite their differing methods, FUE and FUT are roughly equal in effectiveness.
The main differences between the two lies in other aspects such as speed of healing, level of scarring, and so on. Also, some patients are better candidates for one procedure than the other, and the overall hair restoration goals might favor one procedure over the other. These factors are discussed in a consultation.
Is FUE or FUT More Painful?
Studies on post-operative pain have found the FUE method to be the less painful of the two methodologies. In addition, since it is not harvesting strips of skin, FUE does not leave linear scarring. Unlike FUT, it does require shaving the donor area.
Do FUE Scars Fade?
FUE leaves minimal scarring, far less than FUT. In the vast majority of cases, once the initial recovery period has passed, little to no visible scarring remains. Even the exceptions show less scarring than FUT procedures and are easily concealed by even the shortest hair styles. Over time, the scars fade.
What Percentage of FUE Grafts Survive?
The industry standard in the hair transplant field is a 60-70% graft survival rate. As in most fields, reputable providers with expert staff – such as Hair Restoration of Lehigh Valley – usually have even higher success rates, some reporting survival rates of up to 90%. This is especially those taking advantage of the most current technologies.
Does FUE Look Natural?
Think of it like the resolution on your TV set. The higher the resolution, the more detail you see and the more natural it looks. The same holds true with FUE, which you can think of as the “high resolution” option. By working with small groups of individual follicles, FUE can create some of the most organic looking results currently available technology can provide.
