When attempting to understand hair loss, it helps to understand the stages of hair growth. A certain amount of shedding is normal, so instances of hair shedding and hair loss are inextricably entwined with the growth cycle and disruptions to it.
What Are the Cycles of Hair Growth?
Hair growth happens in cycles composed of four phases. Once the end of the cycle is reached, the hair follicle starts over… unless impeded.
First comes the growth phase, where new hair comes in. This is the anagen phase, and the majority of the follicles remain in this phase for 2 to 8 years at a time. In the anagen phase, your hair follicles are pushing out new hairs that will continue to grow until they reach the end of their cycle and fall out. At any given time, approximately 85% to 90% of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase.
Next comes the catagen phase where the hair follicles shrink, and hair growth slows. The hairs separate from the base of the follicle but remain in place during the last bit of growth. Usually about 1% to 3% of the hairs on your head are in this phase at any given time. This phase usually lasts about two weeks.
Following the catagen phase comes the hair’s resting phase, called the telogen phase. Hair neither grows nor falls out as the hair rests. Meanwhile, any follicles that released hair in the catagen phase begin the formation of new hairs This phase usually runs around 2 to 3 months and about 9% of your scalp hairs are in this phase at any point.
The final phase of the growth cycle is exogen. This is the phase where hair is shed. Usually, 50-100 long hairs are shed each day – which is nothing to be concerned about. A small amount of hair on your brush, or in the shower after washing is normal.
How Do You Know If Your Hair Is in the Growth Phase?
There are a number of signs you can look for that indicate hair growth.
- New hair growth is easiest to spot at the temples and around the scalp line. Look for new hairs emerging in these areas.
- If it seems like your hair is getting thicker that might very well be the case. Incoming new strands of hair will increase the overall density and body of your hair.
- New hairs are often softer and tend to curl more. If you notice changes in texture, it might indicate new growth.
